Birds population and research: El Jaguar is a sanctuary for
a large number of birds, migratory and residents. In April 2002
a research team from the COCIBOLCA Foundation as part of the
National Important Bird Areas Program from Bird Life International,
financed by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF),
rediscovered in El Jaguar, for the first time in Nicaragua since
1891, the Golden-cheeked Warbler (Dendroica chrysoparia). At
the same time, the research team detected the presence of the
resident Three-wattled Bellbird (Procnias tricarunculata); both
species are threatened worldwide. Therefore and after the Bird
Life International's standards, El Jaguar classifies as an “Important
Bird Area” IBA .

Among other results the team found 4 new reports for Nicaragua
and in just three days they made an inventory list with 106
species. Until now (April 2005) this inventory list has increased
to 200 species. These results show the importance to conserve
El Jaguar as a very important habitat for birds.

Relying on these facts, El Jaguar has been chosen as one of
the 4 sites in Nicaragua to monitor “over-wintering survival”
MoSI . The MoSIs, that are carried out monthly from November
to March, are executed by ALAS (Alianza par alas Areas Silvestres.

), and sponsored by the California's Institute for Bird Populations,
and in El Jaguar, also by their owners.
